The April 4th meeting of the Honeoye Falls – Town of Mendon Historical Society will feature Jane Oakes, M.S., Local Historian.

The topic of Janes’s talk will be “The History of Cheese Factories in the Genesee Country.”

From farmhouses to factories, New York State was once so well known for its cheeses that the phrase “New York State Full Cream Cheese” was trademarked to prevent imitators across the country. Learn about local cheese factories of the past and how cheese making is once again becoming a successful industry in our region

Jane Oakes has been involved with historical education for over 40 years, beginning as a teen volunteer at the Valentown Museum in Victor. She has spoken to our society a number of times. Her research into local history has contributed to the placement of two structures in Livingston County on the National Register of Historic Places (The Avon Opera House and Avon’s five-arch bridge). Jane holds a BS in Theater with a minor in Anthropology and a MA degree in History.

The meeting will begin at 7:30pm on Thursday, April 4, 2024 at the Mendon Community Center, 167 North Main Street in Honeoye Falls. This facility is handicapped accessible. The meeting is open to the public.
