September 5th Meeting: “Stranger Than Fiction: Life Within the Boundaries of Our Airport”
The September 5th meeting of the Honeoye Falls – Town of Mendon Historical Society will feature Rick Iekel, Author.
The topic of Rick’s talk will be “Stranger Than Fiction: Life Within the Boundaries of Our Airport.”
Few realize the long history of Rochester’s 100 year old, Frederick Douglass Greater Rochester International Airport. Rick tells the airport’s story and shares an insider’s view of the airport. For the airport manager, routine business sometimes gives way to unscripted problem solving. The order of the day is to maintain a smooth operation if you can, or quickly return to normal if you can’t. But, that’s all in a day’s work.
Rick Iekel, author of the book, “The ROC: Journey Thru the 20th Century,” is looking forward to returning to Honeoye Falls, even if only for an evening. His parents called the Village “Home” for over 30 years. Rick spent 28 years working at Rochester’s airport as airline agent, assistant airport manager and director of aviation. A graduate of SUNY, Farmingdale and RIT, he is certified as an Accredited Airport Executive and Past President of the Northeast Chapter, American Association of Airport Executives. Now retired, he shares the airport’s 100 year history and some of the stories from an insider’s point of view.
The meeting will begin at 7:30pm on Thursday, September 5, 2024 at the Mendon Community Center, 167 North Main Street in Honeoye Falls. This facility is handicapped accessible. The meeting is open to the public.
